One reader recently took to the Request Line with a question about CL‘s buttoned shirt from an appearance in 2014. You can still check out CL’s interview on the VFiles from last fall where she can be seen wearing the top while talking casually in front of the camera. If you are at all interested in taking a peak at some of the other interesting pieces she has in her wardrobe, it is well worth a look.
This particular item came about as a result of Donna Karan (DKNY) working on a collaboration with Opening Ceremony. Similar collections have come out of previous Opening Ceremony partnerships. The success of their association was no different. For both men and women this collaboration offered up an intriguing selection to add to their wardrobe.
The DKNY for Opening Ceremony capsule collaboration lasted for only a few seasons but proved to be a consistently interesting take on streetwear. Each installment was heavily inspired by 1990s hip hop styles, employing bold athletically structured attire in primarily black and white. Red and bits of metallic silver came to be incorporated later in order to add small hints of differentiation as the seasons went on. Reinvention of the past allowed for curators and stylists Humberto Leon, Carol Lim, and Jay Massacret to delve into the more historic clothing while bringing a modern touch. Together they worked their way through iconic archives of the Donna Karan label where casual clothing met high fashion. Choice pieces were pulled from many of the collections originating between spring 1991 and fall 1998. Chiefly comprised of crewnecks, hoodies, leggings, sweatpants, beanies and tanks there was also some attention paid to more offbeat choices (jumpsuits for instance). Oversized and easily recognizable clothes were each branded with a reworked DKNY athletic logo, which added to increased cohesion and visibility for the collection.
Having been released over a year ago, the DKNY for Opening Ceremony baseball cotton tee with token logo ($99) seems to be sold out at all online retailers. However, you can still check out their respective websites for continuously updated and current trends. Opening Ceremony’s site can be found at openingceremony.us and DKNY at dkny.com.
